Jets Part Ways with GM Joe Douglas After Over Five Seasons

**Jets Fire GM Joe Douglas After Over Five Seasons**

The New York Jets have opted not to wait until the offseason to overhaul their leadership. On Tuesday, the team announced the firing of general manager Joe Douglas, marking the latest move in a season filled with turmoil.

Douglas’ dismissal comes just 42 days after owner Woody Johnson fired head coach Robert Saleh following a Week 5 loss to the Vikings in London.

"Today, I informed Joe Douglas he will no longer serve as the general manager of the New York Jets," Johnson said in a statement. "I want to thank Joe for his commitment to the Jets over the last six years and wish him and his family the best moving forward. Phil Savage will serve as interim general manager for the remainder of the season. We will begin the search for a new GM immediately."

Douglas, who was in the final year of his contract, oversaw a 3-8 team that fell well short of expectations. The decision to part ways comes as the Jets seek a fresh start after five-plus seasons of struggles under his tenure.

Hired from the Philadelphia Eagles in 2019, where he served as vice president of player personnel, Douglas led the Jets to a 30-64 record without a playoff appearance. His best season came in his first year with a 7-9 record and a .438 win percentage, which would remain the peak of his tenure.

While Douglas earned credit for bolstering the Jets’ defense, including drafting stars like Quinnen Williams, Sauce Gardner, and Garrett Wilson, his inability to solve the quarterback dilemma ultimately sealed his fate.

The decision to draft Zach Wilson second overall in 2021 proved disastrous, as Wilson struggled to live up to expectations. The lack of a viable backup and the high-profile acquisition of Aaron Rodgers—who missed most of the 2023 season due to injury—compounded the team’s offensive woes.

Despite Johnson’s earlier claim that this year’s roster was the most talented of his ownership, Douglas couldn’t deliver results. With both Saleh and Douglas gone, the Jets now face the challenge of rebuilding leadership while attempting to salvage a floundering season.
