Petition for Fresh UK General Election Surpasses 1.7 Million Signatures
Public Discontent Grows Amid Labour Government Policies
A petition demanding a fresh general election in the United Kingdom has garnered over 1.7 million signatures, reflecting widespread dissatisfaction with the Labour government. Critics have pointed to unfulfilled promises and controversial policies as key reasons for the growing backlash.
Even Tesla CEO Elon Musk weighed in, sharing a post about the petition's rapid success. The UK petition system requires a government response once a petition hits 10,000 signatures and allows for parliamentary debate after crossing 100,000 signatures.
"I believe the current Labour Government has gone back on the promises they laid out in the lead-up to the last election," reads the petition started by Michael Westwood, the owner of Britain’s “cheapest pub.”
Westwood, who operates the Wagon and Horses pub with pints priced at just $2.90, expressed disbelief at the petition's viral success. "I never imagined Elon Musk would share my petition," he said.
Musk’s post read: "The General Election petition has now DESTROYED the 200k target within 6 hours—just after midnight in Britain. The British people are about to completely humiliate the Labour Party."
As of the latest update, the petition has amassed 1,771,423 signatures and counting.
Public Sentiment Turns Sour
The Labour Party, led by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, has seen a significant dip in public approval. A recent Ipsos poll revealed that nearly half (49%) of Britons hold an unfavorable view of the Labour Party, just three points behind the opposition Conservatives.
Additionally, two in five Britons feel worse off since Labour assumed power in July 2024. A striking 56% of respondents believe the country is headed in the wrong direction, with only 19% feeling optimistic about Britain’s trajectory.
Westwood suggested the disillusionment is part of a broader trend influenced by global events. “People have seen what’s happened in America and believe collective action can bring change,” he told Express.
The call for a new election underscores growing public frustration and demands for accountability from the government.
