Scorching Heat and Fire Warnings as Millions Endure Heatwave
Victoria and South Australia are bracing for soaring temperatures and heightened fire risks as a heatwave grips the region.
Temperature Forecast
- Melbourne: The mercury is expected to hit 34°C today, peaking at 36°C tomorrow before a cooler 23°C on Sunday.
- Adelaide: Residents face a scorching 36°C today, cooling to 29°C on Saturday and 25°C on Sunday.
Overnight lows will hover around 20°C in some areas, adding little relief from the oppressive heat.
Fire Danger Warnings
The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) has issued high fire danger warnings for western and central Victoria, while East Gippsland faces severe heatwave conditions.
In South Australia, the Country Fire Service has declared a total fire ban for the West Coast, Eastern Eyre Peninsula, and Lower Eyre Peninsula. These areas are under "extreme" fire danger conditions, driven by hot, dry, and gusty north-to-northwesterly winds.
Cooler Weather on the Horizon
The heatwave is expected to ease starting Sunday as a cool change sweeps in from the west. This shift will bring west-to-southwesterly winds, showers, and isolated thunderstorms, with severe thunderstorms possible in South Australia's far west by late afternoon and evening.
Stay Informed
South Australian residents can access updated warnings and emergency information via the state’s revamped Alert SA app, which now provides alerts for:
- Severe weather
- Heatwaves
- Urban fires
- Floods
- Hazardous material incidents
As conditions remain volatile, authorities urge residents to stay alert and prepared for potential fire and weather emergencies.
