Several regions across the UK are gearing up for severe weather conditions as Storm Bert approaches, bringing heavy snow, rain, and strong winds. According to the Met Office and BBC, over 100 schools in Scotland and nearly 200 in Devon and Cornwall have been closed due to snow. A yellow alert for snow and ice remains in effect through Friday, November 22.
Key Weather Warnings
⚠️ The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for:
- Snow and Ice: Affecting parts of Scotland, including Angus, Perth and Kinross, Stirlingshire, Aberdeenshire, and the Highlands.
- Strong Winds: Expected across west Wales, northwest England, northeast England's coasts, parts of Scotland, and much of Northern Ireland.
Timeline: Saturday, November 23, from 5 AM to 7 PM.
Wind gusts of up to 70 mph (113 km/h) and heavy rain are forecasted, with some areas in Wales and Southwest England likely to experience over 100 mm of rain.
Impacts and Advisories
- Travel Disruption: Drivers are urged to proceed with caution, especially in regions expected to face the storm’s brunt. Devon and Cornwall Police have already reported multiple collisions due to hazardous conditions.
- Flood Risks: Heavy rainfall may cause localized flooding in vulnerable areas.
- Icy Roads: Overnight temperatures are expected to dip below zero, increasing the likelihood of ice-related travel risks.
“A northerly airflow will continue to feed snow showers into Scotland, occasionally reaching lower levels and potentially causing travel disruption,” said Matthew Lehnert, Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office.
Additional warnings are expected as conditions evolve.
What’s Next?
Storm Bert, named by Ireland's Met Éireann, is the second named storm of the season. Local authorities are advising motorists to stay updated on weather forecasts and delay non-essential travel where possible.
Prepare for potential disruptions this weekend and stay informed with updates from the Met Office and local authorities.
