Trump Selects Pam Bondi as Attorney General After Gaetz Bows Out

Former President Donald Trump announced his decision to nominate Pam Bondi, the former Florida attorney general, as the next U.S. attorney general following the withdrawal of Representative Matt Gaetz. Gaetz stepped aside amid resistance from Senate Republicans, who cited allegations of sexual misconduct as a barrier to his confirmation.

The appointment of Bondi underscores Trump’s preference for loyalists in key roles. Bondi, a longtime Trump ally who previously served as one of his attorneys during his first impeachment trial, emerged as a natural choice due to her unwavering support and media presence. Sources familiar with the decision-making process noted that Bondi did not formally seek the position but was quickly considered after Gaetz's nomination faltered.

“I am proud to announce former Attorney General of the Great State of Florida, Pam Bondi, as our next Attorney General of the United States," Trump wrote on Truth Social. "Pam will refocus the DOJ to its intended purpose of fighting Crime, and Making America Safe Again. She is smart, tough, and an AMERICA FIRST Fighter who will do a terrific job!”

Bondi’s confirmation would reward her years of dedication to Trump, starting with her vocal defense during his 2016 campaign. She later played a role in his impeachment defense, amplified claims about the 2020 election being stolen, and actively supported him during his 2024 campaign, even attending his criminal trial in New York.

The decision also highlights the unpredictable nature of Trump’s selection process. Sources revealed that Trump evaluates candidates by reviewing their loyalty and television appeal. Initially, he considered conventional options like Mark Paoletta, Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey, and attorney Robert Giuffra but ultimately favored the combative Gaetz.

Gaetz’s candidacy quickly unraveled during meetings with Senate Republicans, who expressed firm opposition to his nomination. Facing reality, Trump informed Gaetz on Thursday morning that he lacked the votes for confirmation. Gaetz withdrew, acknowledging resistance from key senators, including Mitch McConnell, Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, and senator-elect John Curtis.

Trump praised Gaetz's efforts in a statement from his Mar-a-Lago estate, saying, “I greatly appreciate the recent efforts of Matt Gaetz in seeking approval to be attorney general. He was doing very well but, at the same time, did not want to be a distraction for the administration.”

Bondi’s nomination now moves to the Senate for consideration, with Trump’s advisers optimistic about her broad support within the Republican conference.
